Can Creating Deepfakes Become a Crime?

In England and Wales, a new law will make creating sexually explicit deepfake images a criminal offense, irrespective of intent to distribute. Violators could face unlimited fines and imprisonment if images are shared.

This legislation follows the Online Safety Act which criminalized sharing such content. The move targets the growing misuse of AI to superimpose faces onto pornographic content, often involving female celebrities and public figures. The law aims to protect individuals from distress and humiliation and holds creators accountable, emphasizing its significance in combating online abuse and misogyny. I agree with this new law and hope to see it enforced globally.
